In Which Sheebie Needs BBQ Sauce for Some Ribs

Friends and Kitties!

If there's one word that describes both Scott and I, it's clumsy.  (I know, you were probably picturing something else.)  I can (and do) hit my head on everything imaginable, and Scott is forever whacking some body part or another up against immovable objects, in fact no more than two months ago he almost succeeded in amputating both little toes within two days--no mean feat.  He's an accident waiting to happen in the making, so when he told me the other night that he was going out for a quick ride around the block on his bike to test something out I should have given it a little more consideration and said 'Honey, it's dark outside' instead of blithely waving him out the door, because what he actually ended up testing was the tensile strength limit of the ribs on his left side.

I suppose he'd have done better if he had stuck to the pavement where there's street lights, but a quick spin around the park across the road, with zero illumination and all the rocks and gravel was clearly the more adventurous choice.

So there I am, scootled up on the sofa with a blanky and some cats, when Scott comes in from the garage with a pained yet sheepish expression on his face:

Me:  How was your ride?

Scott:  Not so good.

Me:  What happened?

Scott (hesitating, because he knows he did something stupid and I love to point out the obvious):  I fell.

Me:  Shit!  Are you hurt?  Let me see...

Scott:  ow ow ow owwwww!

Already there was a HUGE bruise blossoming on his rib cage (which broke his fall) and a good-sized lump on his shin from where the pedal hit him.  I packed him up with ice, ibuprofen and codeine--it wasn't worth a trip to the emergency room, cos what are they going to do any differently?  Living with Scott I've got first aid down to a science--I cannot tell you how many times I've had to do the "does this need stitches?" assessment.

My poor husband made it through the night, albeit uncomfortably, and noisily endured for the next couple of days.  His shin was fine, but the pain in his ribs wasn't abating.  I, as a graduate (Summa Cum Laude) from the School of Silent Suffering was less than sympathetic--I told him that bruises take a while to heal, to take his pills, and for cripe's sake quit making all those little whimpery noises every time he breathed.  (He detests being "mothered" so no soppy crap from me.)  Apparently I didn't hit quite the right note on the sympathy scale because on the third day after the Nighttime Cycling Incident he took himself off to the Urgent Care where they X-rayed him, and sure enough, ribs number 8 and 9 had hairline fractures, and the physician said breaks take a while to heal, and keep taking his pills.

*headdesk*

Of course just knowing what exactly was wrong helped him immensely--and by golly he's been milking this one for all it's worth.  I really can't fault him though, I imagine it must hurt like the dickens and he did admit that he's a total wimp when it comes to pain.  But I do want him to heal up as quickly as possible because I've been doubly busy at home, doing the chores that normally Scott would do, which is virtually all the housework and with 13 cats there's a ton of it--vacuuming daily, scooping, sweeping, mopping, dusting.  It's a lot!  I am enjoying myself immensely by making him laugh though--he goes 'ha ha OW ha haOWWW don't make me laugh!"
 It's fun.

It's been over a week now and he's getting better.  The irritating moans and groans are gone, and I estimate that soon he'll be healed, hale and hearty, all ready for the next Incident.

There's a garden rake in the garage that looks particularly menacing...

Happy Sunday, and have a Safe Week!

  1. Poor thing. I suppose he won't do that again. He'll try something new, right?

  2. My parents gave me a bicycle last year and the first time I got on it, I fell flat. It's still sitting in my storage building with the tags on it waiting for me to try it again.

  3. "Into every life Scott,er, rain must fall." Hope he's scooping poop in no time! Happy Sunday, furriends. xoxo

  4. ouchie, broke ribs is no laughing matter, it's more of an ouch ouch hahaouch matter! But you already said that, MOL
Hope he feels better soon, and avoids that rake like the plague!

  5. Oh, ouch! Broken ribs are so painful! Hope he feels better soon and stays far away from that rake!

  8. My human (who is pretty clumsy herself) tripped over her own two feet getting out of bed in the middle of the night sometime in the late 1990s and smashed her rib cage on the nightstand. It hurt enough to go to Urgent Care, but unfortunately, apparently not enough to get the good drugs - they handed her a prescription for ibuprofen (back in the days before she developed an allergy to it), and sent her on her way. So she has some idea of what Scott is going through! Not fun. I am sure glad I was not around then - the noise was probably deafening.

  9. You two sure know how to liven up an evening. Cod forbid, you lay on the couch and watch TV. You know, something boring and safe. Bet Scott's watching a little more TV these days. A speedy recovery, Scott, and please stay out of the park, in the dark, on your bike, and don't hike, either. Almost a good rhyme.

  10. The Human cracked a rib in 1985 when she fell off a stepladder while hanging curtains the day after Thanksgiving and crashed onto the coffee table. She hadded a bruise the size of Wisconsin and a lump the size of a grapefruit. She did get the Good Drugs though, and a lot of TLC and eventually she got better. That was Before My Time. Thank goodness, too, because I don't do sympathy. However, SHE feels bad for Scott and his hurty. And for you having to be all nice all the time.

  11. We can see there's no sympathy from you: maybe Scott needs some mancat company to make him feel better!

Cheers for the comment on the blog by the way :)

    Happy healing!

  12. Klutzy... If you look it up in the dictionary you'll see my photo beside the word. You know how Elvira has 2 back wheels? Ask me how many times I've stuck my foot out to launch off and... You'd think after the first 4 or 5 times I'd learn to NOT do that again, right? ummm... no.

At least Scott wasn't bleeding. My ex-hubby use to pass out at the sight of blood... especially his own. Or at the vets for annual shots for our dogs. Fun times.

Did you really say shit on the blog? shocking! =:-o

  13. Yikes! At least he (finally) went to emerg. Gees. The boys are sending purrs for his speedy full recovery, though it takes a while for ribs to heal, I think. So I've heard. I'd rather not have personal experience, thanks.

  14. It seems to be the week for broken ribs as another friend broke one too...

  15. Oh my, that sure does not sound like a fun ouchie. I hope the all better finally gets there!

  16. Poor Scott! I'm glad he's on the mend now. But what is it with men whining over the littlest pain?? My husband is the same way. I hope it's a while before the next accident. :)

  17. Paws crossed that he will soon be in less pain and make a speedy recovery - sending special healing purrs flying your way ... Rainbow

  18. It might help to kick him in the shin real hard so he doesn't notice the pain in his ribs so much.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Oh, wow! Well, I'm glad that the accident was fairly minor and that Scott is recovering. As soon as he's feeling back up to snuff, I would recommend that you develop some fake symptoms that will necessitate your lounging around on a pile of pillows and being fed peeled grapes for at least a week!

    ReplyDelete
  20. That does sound pretty painful! We have all paws crossed for some quick healing of Scott's ribs.

    Watch out for that rake!

  21. OWIES!!

We are laffin' at D Ma's comment.

Pee Ess: we don't know if maybe you don't like to do awardies, but anyway,we did nominate you for the Blog of the Year 2012 Award. (Ha ha, blogger tried to spell correct that Award into Ward. Hee her).

  22. I HAD to laugh at that last line about the garden rake. But I am so sorry that Scott was hurt so badly. And thank goodness he is healing. xox

    ReplyDelete
  23. Oh my goodness! Sounds like the ER is maybe on your speeddial? Be careful with the rake!! :)

  24. Sorry he got some bad ouchies!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Well yes, of course he didn't NEED to do the ER to find these things out but I get the feeling I share this trait with him. I'd be laying there thinking that I'd actually punctured a lung and was slowly dying and then at some point it would be too late to see the Dr. and then it would be such a stupid preventable death had I just swallowed my pride and been checked out *just in case*. Because truly, you just never know. I side with Scott on this one. And I would take all the mothering I could get, if only for the novelty of the experience. I imagine any of my cats would most certainly tell a different story in that respect. I am happy to hear is on the mend and at least being watched from afar, since he hates the anear bit.

    no hugs to him
    but some smooches!

  27. we knew those bikes looked like trouble..... mom says the same thing - she is getting pretty good at "how serious is this" :) Hope Scott is better soon (and let the torture continue.....haha)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Poor guy. I had to laugh at the "School of Silent Suffering"--that's totally Geoff. He's broken most of his ribs at some point or another and describes the experience as "uncomfortable."

    ReplyDelete
  29. Poor guy...we are glad it was nothing serious. The cats must have had a wonderful time recuperating with him :)

  30. OH NO Sheebie we are so sorry. that was a very painful accident for all concerned. Thank goodness the healing is going well.

My hubby is no longer allowed on ladders over 5'. Several years ago in an attempt to save $40.00 on having the gutters cleaned it did it himself. That particular cleaning cost (broke his elbow and lots of strained and stretched muscles in places we won't talk about) $2,500 in medical bills and the pain and suffering was priceless. Now we pay for the professionals to do it.
    Hugs C

  31. You see? This is why we cats NEVER RIDE BIKES! Never. Never ever. Not ever. Sure do hope the bruises heal soon. purrs

Thanks so very much for star #4! Yoo-hoo! YOO-HOO!!! more purrs

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yikes, sure glad to hear that he is on the mend. That will make life somewhat easier. Have a great evening and stay off the bikes Please.

    ReplyDelete
  33. LOL! Poor Scott but I have to admit this was fun to read. It's funny how hearing from the doctor the very same pronouncement that came from you made all the difference for him. I'm kind of like you in that I don't like making a big deal out of injuries and illnesses but hubby definitely does. However, this does sound very painful, poor guy. I'm feeling for you too. My husband has a bad back and I've had to take over the household chores in the past and I know it's rough, but with 13 kitties, that's even more difficult. Hang in there!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hmmm, mebbe all you cats can practice head-butting Dad on the hurty ribs! Just to teach him to be more careful, of course. But the noises he makes should be fun too.

    ReplyDelete
  35. So, what exactly was Scott "testing out" on his bike? How far one can ride in pitch black with no headlamp on a dark and rocky unpaved road?

I hope you have PLENTY of insurance!!

Seriously, we're glad that he is going to be okay.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Scott needs one of those miners lights to fasten to his head! We hope the ribs heal quickly.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Oh, Gees! Wrap that man in bubble wrap!!

I hope he gets better soon...for your sake as well as his.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Pop is owww-ing along with Scott. He's clumsy as heck and has had several concussions. Last year he broke his elbow and has broke his back and ribs falling. That said, this little kitteh found it quite funny. Hope he gets better.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Oh boy. And you have all those shelves hanging from the ceiling in the Lounge too. Ouch!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Well our huMom knows it's small of her, but she's relieved to learn that she's not the only one going around smacking her head on shelves, cabinet door and anything else she can bend over near. Last week it was confirmed yet again that she's pasted the clumsy gene on to our boy/man. He's fallen in the shower, twice in the last 2 weeks. So we are sorry that anyone had to get hurt. And we are happy Mr. Scott is getting better. Thanks for sharing cause now our humans feel like they might not be alone on clumsy island.

    Purrs to you

  41. You assess things like mum. Stitches, yes or no. Bleed to death, yes or no. Pain outside of typical bruise or ache. If the answers are no, you deal with it and move on.

Last time mum needed stitches, was nearly 5 years ago. Bad cut, wouldn't stop bleeding, but urgent care was closed so mum took herself to the ER.

  42. Oh I mustn't laugh but he is worse than my hubby, which I never thought possible..lol I am glad he is on the mend, and YES men milk it and milk it..Hope he doesn't get Man-Flu on top.lol Don't work too hard xx00xx

  43. Ouch - the injury doesn't sound like fun, but I have to admit I'm like you most of the time with the silent suffering.

When I was growing my mom used to say if we wanted sympathy to look it up in the dictionary (between a couple of unmentionable words that'll I'll leave out of my comment!)

Hope he's feeling better...and well enough to do his share of the chores!

    ReplyDelete
  44. All injuries aside, this was a great story! "HahaOWhahaOWOW!" Poor Scott!
