Solar Sunday

Friends and Kitties!

It's been quite the week at Casa Cerecke, what with the drywall repairs, cat shaving, and solar panel installation.

We had 36 solar panels installed, which should completely wipe out our electrical bill, and hopefully provide us with some small dividends in the future...we bought our system outright.  It's nice to know we can keep the A/C as cool as we want (and run anything else) and not be using up non-renewable resources.  With the government rebate our recoup time for the cost of the initial build will be about eight years, which we thought was doable--so we did!
Our neighbor Gisela had the same company do her solar installation last year and she's been very satisfied--with the workmanship and her non-existent power bills.

The poor kitties were pretty freaked out by all the banging on the roof, especially whenever the guys dropped a tool and it rolled down onto the Catio!

The back of our house faces West and South so we have great exposure.  We'll get at least 8 hours of direct sunlight daily, even in the Winter months.

The panel sit a few inches up off the roof on a frame, and I think the attic's heat load will benefit from all that shade, it really cooks up there on those 110+ degree days.  As soon as we have our final inspection, Nevada Power will hook us up and we'll be generating our own juice...

Come on, Summer!

Happy SUNday!

Happy Easter!

  1. How awesome is that! My human really wishes she could install solar here, but it's just not in the budget at the moment.

  3. Wow, that is going to save some big bucks. Would love to do that here if we can get it in our budget.

  4. This is brilliant - green and nerdy, what could be better!? Äiti is really impressed. Sadly, it wouldn't work here.

  5. We are considering some here. When we were in the fifthwheel it could run on solar - all but the air conditioning and we never ran that. It was pretty cool to be so free.

  6. Awesomeness! And I bet the kitties are glad they're done! Noisey visitors are the worst, MOL

  7. Hmmm. I wonder if we can install solar panels here? We have ample sun all year round...

  8. The Human thinks that is very cool (get it? c-o-o-l??), but me, I wanna know why *still* there are no noodie Johnson pictures? So disappointing. Again. Sigh.

  9. We don't have solar panels at our housing estates but we have a few installed at school. So our bills are not as high as may schools on the district.

  14. That's fantastic, Trish! I see the occasional business around town with solar panels on their roof, but not too many. I'd love it if our condo company would get on board with that, but it won't happen in my lifetime. LOL.

    Happy Easter!

  15. Wow that is so wonderful! I am big fan of non-existing bills :-)

  16. That is very smart. We have thought about that too since the back side of our house and roof gets all the sun. Happy Easter Hoppy Hugs from all of us!!!

  17. Paws up for your solar panels! We love the idea of being able to be essentially off the grid like that. The head peep looked into it a few years ago and the cost of install/removal and the lifespan of the cells made it so the numbers didn't work for us, but with technology getting better, we are hoping to go solar someday, preferably before the laws that discourage it in some states show up here.

  18. That is great! Using as much power as you want and no more bills sounds wonderful.

  19. We have solar panels on our roof and were lucky as the company who approached us put them on for free if we let people round to look - but they never sent anyone!!
We have had good a reduction in the electricity bills in the summer but in reality winter doesn't contribute much at all as it is dark so much longer and often dull or raining.

  21. Great that you will get free electricity. Several friends here have had them installed recently but we don't get the sun that you do. On count down now for Vegas Yay

  22. Anything to help with the electric bill! Mine has doubled over the years in my apartment in spite of the usual energy savers. They just keep finding ways to jack up charges.

We know the kitties will be so glad when all those introoders are gone. (Jenna wants to see more nekkid kitty pictures!)

  23. Oh and they are pretty too. I was wondering how they were installed on the tile. Looks like you have a great location and will benefit greatly. I know the Baker's Dz are glad it is over.

  24. That is AWESOME! It would be awesome if our townhouse association approved something like that here.

    Happy Easter!

  25. What a great idea! Because of the lack of the daylight hours in the winter, solar isn't a particularly good option. But geothermal is becoming more cost effective and requires less space. I expect we'll see more eco-friendly options for heating and cooling our homes.

No electricity bill, that would be awesome.

    Happy Easter!

Happy Easter to our furriends and their humans.

Can't wait for updates as we are thinking about it too!
    oH Yes...Hoppy Easter!

  28. It's a good choice for you in Las Vegas. I can see where you would recoup your costs and be making your own power. That is awesome.

  29. That wasn't very nice of the workers to drop their tools on the catio! But the solar panels are pretty dang cool! Yay for the 30% tax credit too! :)

  30. totally pawsome! there is a house in our 'hood that has solar panels. It has our mom thinking, but we say first things first... our catio! mol!
    Happy Easter!

  31. And you live in the purrfect location for solar panels - sunny and dry. They aren't as common here. A very Happy Easter to you all!

    Happy Easter!

  34. So cool!! I want to go solar but I'm waiting till we move to the new house... no we're not moving or looking yet - just thinking positive... and chilled.

  35. Happy Solar Sunday! We have too many trees shading the house fer that. TBT says that, 27 years ago, passive cooling was best option. May be something to that, the A/C in Summer is the least cost. Heating in Winter is 4 times the Summer cost.

  36. We are envious of your solar panels! And think its great you guys got them!
    Happy Easter!

    ReplyDelete
  37. VERY cool and VERY responsible of you! Wish we could do that here...I don't think we get enough sun here...especially in winter...to install solar panels. I'm anxious to hear how much you save!!! COOL!

  38. Wow...how cool is that! (pun intended)
We hate it when dad is even walking around on the roof. It is really hackle-raising when he uses the leaf blower to clean the gutters. -S&S

  39. Just caught up with the posts we missed! We lift comments but you might not go back & see them.....we love the nekkidness and the sleek softness underneath. Feels great doesn't it! Mom could't keep her hands off Patches when he'd get his lion cut. Is the Screechy Lady wearing Keen Sandals in that picture? Mom has 3 pairs, loves them.
We see the Rhino has a new home. Finders Keepers. Every home should have a rhino.

  40. Happy Easter, Kitties! Hope the bunny brought you some treats today ;-) Oh, and Johnny? I'm still waiting.

  41. How exciting! I would so love to do that but right now the cost is a little over out budget.

I hope they start incorporating solar panels in new builds.. it would so be the smart thing to do

  42. ooooh, mommy's drooling. she WANTS, she WANTS.

  43. We had 38 panels installed in November and will do 12 more this fall. We have a direct southern exposure, but I suspect you will do better with more sunny days in Las Vegas than we will here in Virginia. Good job doing something for our Earth and your energy consumption. Hugs, Janet
