Sheeb E. and Wile E.

Friends and Kitties!

Sheebie here.

It's been a jackpot summer at work so far for wildlife...snakes, snake skins, the dive-bombing Territorial Raven Family (more about them in another post), and last night, a coyote in the parking lot.
The plant out at the lake is smack dab in the middle of the desert and it very much belongs to the animals.  It's not uncommon to see--or more often, hear--packs of coyotes at dawn and dusk.  They're very smart, and a local band has become very habituated to seeing humans around.  Naturally, they get fed, too; we're not supposed to feed them but you know how well people like to follow stupid rules...we see an animal, it should be cared for.

Especially this lame female.  See her back right leg?  It's twisted, poor thing.  She's braver than most, probably because begging is her particular survival method.

It works, too!  She got three burrito-sized tortillas and a chicken breast from me--I hope that was a good enough haul for the night--and if not, there's always the next shift change.

Happy Sunday, and have a Great Week!

  1. We have a pack that runs in the field across the street. Beware the chicken that does not go into the chicken house at night

  2. That's really special to have all that wildlife around you...the coyote howling is quite something, isn't it? Have an easy Sunday everyone!

  3. Any relation? The name seems awfully close to your Mommy's.

  4. Wow. That must be something. We don't have any wild life but there is some at a park near us. There are otters. But it's a good thing not many people know that it have seen them.

  5. Wow! That is wild wildlife - kitties stay IN the catio please! And yes, all creatures deserve to live together in peace and harmony with extra foods.
    Except mosquitos, Äiti says.

  6. We have coyotes in our hilly big city neighborhood - and my human says that is a HUGE reason why we are indoor-only kitties!

  7. Wow they do get close. I am glad you break the rules and feed them especially this little girl because she needs you to. Thank you for being you and doing that

  8. Perhaps with your continuing help, the female coyote will heal enough she will not have to beg for food. We have them now too, they moved into our province about 30 years ago.

  9. Well done feeding the coyote poor little thing. We put food out for the foxes every night and never get fed up with watching them.

  12. Can anything be done for the female one? Maybe some rescue group can trap her, fix her up, something like that ?

  13. Lucky coyote (having you to look out for her)! I'm sure you keep a close (protective) eye on The Baby during her outdoor garden rambles.

  15. We purr the coyote heals.
That is also why we are indoor kitties too. We have not seen any
where we live, but there are big woods behind us.

  16. It is exciting to see the wildlife. I am glad we don't have coyotes here though. That would mean no walks in the fields for me even though mum accompanies me.

  18. That is always so sad to see a wild animal with a bad leg. We have coyotes around here too and I am always nervous they will get the cats, but so far they haven't. There are lots of trees right behind me and the coyotes can't get into the fenced yard.Good for you to give that poor girl with the hurt leg, some food.

  19. I'm not overly fond of coyotes since they are known to kill cats. I'd be the same way, though. I can't resist helping an animal in need.

  20. Good for you. Who knows, she could be having trouble trying to chase down her prey with a lame leg like that.
My husband has done night time desert flight testing at an Arizona and they have to wear boots & tie their pants legs closed because of the funky big spiders that like to scamper up & sting. He sees all the night animals too, and some that come to bask on the asphalt runway when it cools down at night. And their poops in the morning.

  22. I'm glad to hear these coyotes are not close to your Catio. We have coyotes outside the city and a cat or small dog are often easy prey. So they scare me.

Having said that, it is good of you to care for the disabled one. I'm sure she is grateful!

  23. Sadly, Acme Corporation doesn't sell food, so Ms. Wile E. is very lucky you share yours.

  24. Is there a local group that practices TNR on coyotes? Maybe there is a way to trap the lame girl and see if her injured leg could be healed...just thinking out loud.

  25. Coyotes are very smart---be careful not to feed them because they will carry off kitties and dogs very easily for their dinner. You don't want to encourage their visits to your house!!

  26. Oh poor coyote...but she was lucky to be seen by you. She got her belly full now :-)

  27. Wow we are glad you were able to help!

  28. reminds me of my dad - he always had cans of dog food in his car to feed the coyotes out where he worked :)

  29. Wow, good thing Wile E likes Mexican. ;)

We have coyotes here on our island...we've never actually seen them, but late late at night, sometime we can hear them singing.

  33. My mom-person arn´t much for stoopid rules either and whold have given the Coyote her burrito´s too :)

    XOXO

  34. Poor thing. Bet she liked the food haul!
Our mom remembers the coyote that came up to the backyard and went nose to nose with our boxer dog when she was a child, living on the farm back in Texas!!

  35. Glad you all are feeding her so that she doesn't have to look for small animals to eat. Of course, Mom says if she will eat scorpions, feed her all of those you can find. Mom still has a hole in her ankle, and Home Health keeps coming to pack it. She's getting pretty frustrated. She may never travel to the southwest again!
