Tiny Johnson was hauled off to the vet Sunday...mainly cos he had the Massive Squirts (which are much better after a dose of Squirt-Stop*) but while he was there he got a Senior work-up and it turns out he has 1) advanced arthritis in his hips and spine, and 2) a heart murmur. The peeps are going to give Johnny the supplement Cosequin for his hips, but Mommy wonders how best to administer it. Anybody have a good way to get it down? And where's the best deal to buy it?
Secondly, is there anything they should be doing for the murmur other than monitoring? Mommy will speak with the vet Tuesday when she picks Johnny up (yup, he "got" to stay over two nights) but she trusts all y'alls advice a whole bunch more--you've got the Down in the Cat Trenches experience, so to speak.
The Baby continues to improve incrementally, taking marathon catnaps in between sleeping sessions. Daddy stuffs her full of kibble and treats (of which WE get none--unfair!) every time he sees her awake and takes her out for patrols any time she pesters requests a stroll.

So, in between running a Feline Hospital and attending BlogPaws, Mommy says our posts will be spotty this week. Why she can't do everything is totally beyond our ken; she's a lazy wench in our opinion. What she needs to do is get organized!

I don't recall if you feed Johnny canned food, but if you do, just open the Cosequin capsule and sprinkle it over the food and mix it in a bit. My two girls have been taking it this way for years. I used to get the best prices on Amazon, but have used Chewy the last time.

ReplyDeleteI don't know if Johnny likes people foods, but Star will take any medicine if I put it in gooseliver/braunschwiger. If it's small enough I can wrap it in ham, which she nearly swallows whole.
Poor lad! Cosequin is basically glucosamine sulfate and Punapippuri gets this still as it helps after his luxated patella. It is also very good for mancats as it helps stop the build up of urine crystals - apparently- if they do not get enough water. he takes it as a treat, using seraquin tablets rather than capsules. But there are treats you can get with glucosamine inside, and they may be more palatable.
ReplyDeleteMonty-cat had very bad arthritis. Magnetic collars have been shown, in the UK , to help dogs and I got him one. I don't know how much it helped him, as he also went on metacam(yes, this did destroy his kidneys but he was a very senior exferal)
Heart murmurs -as far as I know - can come and go unless there is some underlying condition. Sometimes it is just down to stress from a vet visit so next time he goes, have it checked again.

Poor Johnny too! We have no advice about the administering of meds since our main goal is to REFUSE with all our MIGHT. Elliott has a heart murmur but my mom and our vet are not especially concerned. My old bro Eddie also had that and it never adversely affected him. So really, we got nothin'.

ReplyDeleteI had a cat with a congenital heart defect and it was discovered because he had a murmur. The vet put him on Inderal to stabilize his heart. Because of the amount of damage, his heart was 3x thicker than a normal heart. But I would think the treatment would depend on what the cause is. I had one myself when I was younger & all they did was monitor it and it went away after a while.

Youre gonna get better Tiny Johnson. We're sorry we have no advice as we all hate meds and will have nuffin to do with it. Bujang goes to the osteopath for his stressed out spine. Other than that, we cant be of much help. But we will stay cheerful for both The Baby and Tiny J and think good thoughts every day for both.
ReplyDeleteJust like other's have said, we open the Cosequin capsule and mix in the contents to some wet food and Buddy snarfs it down. We had to be careful though, cuz after awhile it started troubling his tummy, making him hork. So, now we only occasionally give it to him.
ReplyDeleteAs for where to procure - I check Amazon.com and Costco - and get whichever has the best deal. It seems to vary.
Can't help about the heart murmur, haven't encountered that yet. Hope not to!

Awwwww Mr Johnson!! :-( We are so sorry to read of your pains and illnesses. We send you many purrs and hugs! Old Kitty is useless at administering any type of feline drugs and always relies on the vet nurses to do it for her! And for the heart murmur monitoring as well. The vet's know her by now as they were bombarded by many phone calls when this happened to her angel kitties! Hugs to sweet The Baby too! Take care y'all!! x

Oh, Tiny Johnson, too? You aren't having a bit of stress this week, around there, are you? The suggestions above using canned food to mask the meds is a good one if he'll fall for it. The less stress on him, the better all around. Murmurs are usually something you just monitor. Our cat who came before, Cyrano, had a murmur for the last 8 years of his life. If you didn't have a stethoscope, you would never have known.

ReplyDeleteWell we are glad to hear the good news about the Baby. So sorry Johnny had to go to the vets too. That is the way things go around here. I have had three cats with heart murmurs and we did nothing. But I guess it depends on how bad it is. Our Mister has had his for 12 years now. You got some good ideas for giving Johnny his medicine. ReplyDeletebe sure to ask the "grade" of the heart murmur....that makes a huge difference. really it is just about monitoring since you can't do much about it. as for the meds, depending on liquid or pill, trying mixing it with something VERY nommy. tell the mommy to have fun at Blog Paws - our mom will miss seeing everyone

ReplyDeleteErnie gets cosequin. The mom just opens up the capsule and mixes the powder into his canned food. He doesn't even know it's there. We've also heard that you can sprinkle it right onto dry food too, though we've never tried that.
The mom has bought it through Amazon...usually buys a couple of bottles at a time to save on shipping. Last time she bought it through Chewy along with our foods.

NOT JOHNNY!! Our mom is counting on meeting him this Friday - we hope the squirts get under control. Skootch has had a heart murmur all his life, and he is 16. He has always been frail, but somehow has survived [with a lot of hovering by Mom].I guess you need to keep an eye on Tiny. We can't offer advice on the cosequin, but everyone else has, so try the food trick.

Shop around Mr. Chewy or Entirely Pets where we have $250.00 shopping spree on now. GG had a heart murmur that disappeared the year before he died. They don't worry me. See you soon!

ReplyDeleteOh dear. Not another sick kitty. You have your hands full. Oscar kitty just started cosequin for his arthritis. It's hit or miss. I sprinkle it on his wet food and mix it in pretty good. Some days he will eat it and other days he turns away from it.

Trish, Lily Olivia has a grade 2 heart murmur just diagnosed at age 15. Supposedly it is something that can happen with age. I think they go to grade 7. It is just something to check at annual visits at this level according to our vet. Looking forward to meeting you. Hugs, Janet
