Sassy Sunday with Sheebie

Friends and Kitties!

This Sunday I thought I'd take you around our yard.  Gardening in the desert is different than in the Midwest, but you can still have a nice green space if you select the right plants and irrigate correctly.  Almost all of our  plants are drip irrigated with just a couple of sprayers, and Scott does a bit of hand watering in the evenings. Everything is well established, and if something isn't hardy it's GONE--only the strongest survive at chez Cerecke!

The star jasmine in the back courtyard.  Scott put the lattice up last year and it's starting to spread.  The smell is heavenly, when I go outside in the mornings (to molest the kitties) and the air is heavy with scent.  Henry's hut is now a gardening hutch.  We think he did have people and they moved.

Houston, we have tomatoes!
Historically we haven't had a lot of luck with 'maters here, but we got them in early enough (we hope) for them to ripen before it gets too hot and they split.

Looking down the path along the back of the Catio.
Scott had a photographer's assistant.

The path, facing the other direction.  The tree on the left is some sort of golden privet trained into a tree, and the tree on the right is the lemon.  There's cyprus along the wall, and arborvitae by the Catio as well as in the corners of the block wall.

Turning the corner by the lantana garden, we have butterfly bushes on the left, and on the right more arborvitae and another privet thingy.  Beyond the butterfly bushes are some bottlebrush and succulents.

A close up of the bottlebrush flowers.  The birds love the berries this makes!

Here we are 'rounding the bend at the front of the house.  This photo is a few weeks old, the Mexican primrose at the base of the canary palms hasn't bloomed yet.

The mexican primrose is on the right--I just love it--and another variety of lantana by the fence.

This is the urn we garbage-picked last fall, Scott made it the centerpiece of a new bed he made.  The purple flowers are a variety of sage, and please don't ask what the yellow ones are...I can never remember!  Some type of daisy.

The view from the driveway; this is an older photo, too--nothing is in flower.

Now, I did promise in the post's title that there was some sass today...and here it is:

Happy Sunday!

  9. MOL that's some swishy sass! Love your garden! I'm assuming that's the Baby out there? Is she the only one allowed out? or is she an escape artist?

  10. Fantastic sass - we want Äiti to put this on the big screen!!!!
Äiti is going all green herself over your garden, Mom Trish. We don't know why - she's too darn lazy to do any work on the patch of lawn and berry bushes here. She just about manages a kissanminttu crop each year, but that's it. But she is telling us it's just so incredible what that little molecule water does - you have brown, brown and more brown outside, and a rainbow of colour inside your yard. No wonder the Georges and hummers all flock to your place. It's absolutely beautiful.

  12. You guys have done a great job with your landscaping. I could use your skills for our front space -- as could the new neighbours.

  13. I don't actually "do" gardening - my brother got the green fingers. Mine are a bit yellow! - but I am really impressed with yours :) As you say it is so different in the desert, but you guys have given a lot of thought and care!

I see you did the gif thing lol I've done one but am too ashamed to blog it. Might try again and do a bit better. It's difficult to get it without the whole scene jumping around!!!

  16. Your garden is lovely! We never imagined there could be so many lovely and colourful flowers that would grow in the desert. Mum has only just potted our tomatoes up and they are only about 3 inches high. They don't usually mature until August.
We like Salem's wiggle bum at the end!

  28. After reading your post the boyz let me know they want to trade me for someone willing to make their yard more interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Everything looks beautiful! Tomatoes!!! We were debating planting any this year since have a farm five minutes away but nothing beats homegrown.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Love the landscaping. The tomato comment makes me laugh because I pray for the season to last long enough for mine to develop and your's split. Good thing for market gardens!

    Cute bum wiggle too!

  31. We love all the pictures especially the last one! :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Your garden is BEAUTIFUL! I'm gonna sit down and have a little chat with the peep this evening. Obviously, she has been slacking! My garden doesn't even look a quarter as nice as yours. She's gonna have to pull up her boots, I think!

  33. You really have a lovely garden, and it's so different from mine with the desert landscaping. Love it. Love that bottlebrush flower.
    And the sassy ass!

  35. The yard (and the kitty) look great!

  36. PlumaBlanca the working car says, "Mom and I loves your garden. We live in the desert too and it sure is a different type of gardening! Mom plants alot of lavenders, mints, and other herbs but anything that doesn't make it is replaced by more of what wants to grow...and I have 10 catnip plants!"

    ReplyDelete
  37. What beautiful landscaping. You must work very hard on it!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Great tour! We recall an earlier tour, an it seems ta us that there is more stuff growin in yer yard.

Good luck with the tamaters. TBT says the splitting usually happens when they get too much water at once. The fruit swells up faster than the skin can grow. But he's not familiar with dry desert-growin conditions.

  39. A beautiful garden in what is a challenging environment. If only we could send you some of our rainwater...

  40. What awesome garden!!! So cute!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Wow! You are such creative people and obviously have green thumbs, to boot! I can't do as well in a more temPURRate climate. You have planted and coaxed so much colour out of your desert soil. It is truly imPURRessive!

Is that Salem's sassy ass or Sylvester's? I'm thinking the former rather than the latter. Good stuff!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I think the key to these great photo's are surely the photographers assistant! Your garden is really lovely.

    Nubbin wiggles,
