Feathered Friday

Kitties!

We have exciting news.
It's a hummingbird nest...

...and look--Mrs. Hummer is in it!

We have hummers in our yard year-round, and Daddy feeds them.  Every morning when Mommy goes out with The Baby they get strafed as soon as they round the North corner of the house, so Mommy got crafty suspicious and watched for a couple of days to see where the tiny dive-bomber was emerging from.  Turns out that the bottle-brush tree is the new nursery.

Mommy peeked inside the nest when Mrs. Hummer was at the feeder, and sure enough, there's two eggs inside!  Thay are tiny, like miniature jellybeans.  Mommy will try to get photos but she doesn't want to scare Mrs. Hummer off, so she's no promises.  (She took these with the zoom.)

Furthermore, you'll be pleased to know that our fur is in the nest!  Mommy distinctly saw cat hairs poking out all over.  Incubation lasts only two weeks so we'll be updating soon...

Happy Friday!

  1. Oh, how exciting!! I always love watching birds at their nests and seeing the babies. When I was a kid, we had some robins build a nest right outside our front door, and I'm pretty sure half the nest was made from my dad's hair clippings that my mom dumped in the garden.

  2. THAT is FANTASTIC!!! They grow so quickly and you are truly in for some fabulous photos! We can't wait! (well some of us can wait as we still shy our Ornj face away from bird noises) But most of us will be waiting with baited breaths.

    xoxo
    Good Luck Baby!

  13. You are the luckiest kitties on the entire planet. Our humans have been trying to get hummingbirds for years and years. Last year, one finally showed up. To have them all year round must be heaven and now a nest. When we saw all that furminated floofiness, we were going to suggest that you leave it in the yard for nests. We have an award for you waiting on our Thankful Thursday post. Purrs and paw-pats, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo

  24. Baby,
Hopefully, your mom and dad taught you to look at the baby hummers and not dine on them. That would be sad.

  32. Oh my, that's so exciting!!!
Glogirly & Gloman once stayed at a ranch just outside of Yosemite that was a *stopping point* for the migrating hummingbirds. The people that owned the ranch did research and would catch and band them, then release them so the the DNR could track them. They saw 1000's of them and said it was one of the most amazing things they've ever seen!
