Whisker Mystery, Part Deux

Kitties!

Maui here.
Not that you can tell, but I *am* missing a whisker!

Yesterday's Mystery Whisker belonged to me...Mommy snagged it from out of my favorite nest, deep in the linen closet.  (Bottom shelf, all the way in the back, behind a nice fuzzy blanket on top of a cozy towel.  I set it up just for him, he loves to burrow.--ed)

I hope you enjoyed my little mystery!

Flighty Friday!

Kitties!

Mommy went out to take photos of the baby hummingbirds Thursday morning and they scared the bejeebers outta her--they flew right up at her and then into the tree!

They are fiesty little buggers.  Mommy couldn't see the second chick but she sure could hear it...they were both screaming their fool heads off while Missus Hummer dive-bombed Mommy.

About the only time they shut up was when they were getting fed--yup, Mommy saw it(!!)--but unfortunately she wasn't fast enough to get any photos.

The chicks are about half the size of their Mom, less than two inches (5 cm) long.  However, they have a ton of sass...

...and poop...still!

They are still sleeping in the nest but not for too much longer, we think, it's pretty small now compared to how much they've grown.  Since we have two hummerbird feeders they may stick around for a bit before they take off for their own territories--but we don't know for sure.  Hummers aren't known for their sharing abilities, MOL.  In fact, Mommy and Daddy were sitting on the bench in the front yard as it was getting dark and there were at least SIX of 'em squabbling over the feeders!  Topping off for the evening, no doubt.

FLEDGLING Friday!

Kitties!

The snax with toothpicks baby hummingbirds have gotten their feathers!
Look at how much larger they are after just one week...it's amazing.

Pretty soon they'll be just the right size for an amuse bouche...

...OK, OK,  we're kidding...these birdies ain't for eatin'.

*sigh*

Besides, who wants to consume something that poops, All.  The.  Time.
!!!

Happy Friday!

And then...there were Two!

Kitties!

It's Week Three of the Baby Hummer Story!

As you can see, the nestlings have gotten a lot bigger, and they have some pinfeathers already.   Baby #2 hatched out the day after the first one, so they are nine and ten days old now.  They don't seem to peep at all, but as you can see they sure can poop!  Missus Hummer has been busy busy busy feeding her babies, she's at the feeder elebenty billion times a day, filling up, plus our Salvia is in bloom and she loves the nectar from those flowers.  A couple readers have asked what type of hummers these are and Mommy is pretty sure they are Anna's Hummingbirds, but since the females are rather drab it's hard to tell for sure; and like Mommy wrote a pal the males (easier to identify) don't stick around, those faithless wretches, MOL.

Stay tuned for next Feathered Friday!

Happy Friday!

Feathered Friday, Week TWO

Kitties!

Earlier this week Mommy got a short video of Mrs. Hummerbird sitting on her nest!
It was a very windy day, and as you know her cinematography is amateurish stinky at best, so it's not the greatest...but you can see the Missus in the center of the screen to start (if you look hard) and the eggs in the nest at the end.
See it on YouTube HERE

And then, just yesterday, there was THIS!!!

A baby chick!
And the other egg looks like the second chick hatching out; see the ring around the shell?
Mommy says the baby was bobbing his head around, and it's SO ugly it's adorable.

The hummer feeder is outside the window of Daddy's office, so when he see the Missus drinking he shouts and Mommy runs out with her phone to get a quick photo--that way she doesn't scare Mrs. Hummer off her nest any more.  Mommy will get more photos this week and hopefully we'll have another update next Friday...we are all SO excited!

Feathered Friday

Kitties!

We have exciting news.
It's a hummingbird nest...

...and look--Mrs. Hummer is in it!

We have hummers in our yard year-round, and Daddy feeds them.  Every morning when Mommy goes out with The Baby they get strafed as soon as they round the North corner of the house, so Mommy got crafty suspicious and watched for a couple of days to see where the tiny dive-bomber was emerging from.  Turns out that the bottle-brush tree is the new nursery.

Mommy peeked inside the nest when Mrs. Hummer was at the feeder, and sure enough, there's two eggs inside!  Thay are tiny, like miniature jellybeans.  Mommy will try to get photos but she doesn't want to scare Mrs. Hummer off, so she's no promises.  (She took these with the zoom.)

Furthermore, you'll be pleased to know that our fur is in the nest!  Mommy distinctly saw cat hairs poking out all over.  Incubation lasts only two weeks so we'll be updating soon...

Happy Friday!

Sheebie Sees Some Sights

Friends and Kitties!

Sheebie here.

I was going through my phone photos and I picked out a few good* ones to show you.

This was taken along a part of the wash that is currently being revegetated.  I decided to ride the gravel road instead of the bike trail for a new perspective.  The pipes on the banks are for reclaimed water irrigation, and the foliage are all native plants.  You can see the dams in the background slowing the water down, allowing a series of ponds to form. The bird in the pond nearest me is a Great Blue Heron--I saw (I think) seven of them!  Imagine, waterbirds in the Mojave Desert--there is a truly diverse biome here in the Las Vegas valley.
(The building in the far background is Sam Boyd Stadium.)

Scott and I were out and about and he realized he had on two different shoes!
Stylin'.
See the bumps and scrapes on his shins?  He's as bad as a six-year-old.

A nest in a cholla cactus at work.  It didn't have any feathers or poop in it so it was likely just a practice nest.

This was taken in late July, during Monsoon season, again at work.  It was pouring in the Spring Mountains forty miles off and sunny in Henderson.
I love the vistas out here.

Driving home the other afternoon I saw a lady out walking with her miniature pony!  Of course I pulled over to talk and get a couple pictures.  His name was Buddy, and he was the friendliest little soul--walked right up to the car window and peered in--he had to snuffle me, and nibble my fingers, too!  The crew had a field day sniffing the horse spit on my hands when I got home.

There's more, but I'll save those for another day...The next couple of weeks for me are going to be exciting, yet strange, what with my schedule changing.  My intentions are to keep up a regular posting schedule--everything else is up for grabs, though!  No promises.  I can't wait to awaken naturally, without the effing alarm clock.  Two more days.  wheeeeeeeeee!!!!!!

Happy Sunday--Have a Great Week!

Bon Fille Friday

Kitties!

The Baby here.
Hello.

One of my favorite things to do is pose nicely in bright light.  Not only does the sun feel good on my hide, my shiny fur overexposes Mommy's photos and drives her insane.  Insaner.

Rats!  In a rare moment of lucidity, she adjusted the camera settings.

Oh well, if she wants to photograph me delicately sniffing the Feather Bon Bon, I guess I won't object.

What's that, Mommy?  Lubbins?

oooooooooooohhhh...
I won't object to that, either.

Happy Friday!

Thlurping Thursday

Kitties!

Thweet, I mean Sweet Pea here.
Gosh, it's hard to meow with feathers stuck to your tongue!

::giggle::
::snort::

Hey!  Who's laughing at me?

Don't think I didn't hear you up there...

...both of you!

See--it's not as easy eating feathers as you guys thought!

ha ha ha!!!
There's one caught in your whiskers, May Ling!

May Ling:  Be quiet.  I like it there.  It's decorative.

And Felix, did you know that you have a feather stuck to your nose?

Felix:  Not any more, I don't.

We all agree, the Feathered Bon Bon is tasty, but significantly more difficult to consume than a can of stinky goodness.  The sacrifices we kitties are forced to make...it's just too awful.

Happy Thursday!

Scouty Samples the Goods

Kitties!

Grayce here.
Please excuse the feather stuck to my lips; I've been busy examining the interior filling of the mystery nest, a.k.a. The Feather Bon Bon (FBB).

I told Mommy that Scouty needed to see what was inside so she moved half of the FBB up near the purple hidey-hut where he was snoozing.  Within seconds Scouty stuck his head out of the doorway, just like a turtle!  He was very interested.

So was his snoozing partner, Johnny.

Scouty enjoyed the FBB so much he started dribbling...and thoughts of tasty feathered flying feasts flittered through his head.  He has actually caught (and eaten!) birds on the Catio so he knows how tasty they are, the lucky dog.  Wait, can I say that?
Oh well, too late now.

After a few minutes Mr. Argy-Bargy Johnson had to check out the FBB for himself and "muscled" (he claims it's muscle) Scouty out of the doorway.

But only for a minute.  The turtle head reappeared as soon as Johnny's bum cleared the arch...

...because Scouty decided that sniffing the FBB wasn't enough, he needed to nom the filling!
(squeee!  His gums are starting to get freckled just like Felix's--ed)

Feathers are rather dry and tough to get down but with perseverance--and a barbed tongue--he got the job done.

Tomorrow...a Tongue Extravaganza!

Happy Wednesday!

Inside the Mystery Object!

Kitties!

You all are such fart smellers, we mean, smart fellers...yesterday's Mystery Object was indeed a BIRDY NEST!
Mommy broke it apart so we could examine the inside, and also to prevent any olfactory monopolization whapfests.

There weren't any eggs or birdies (or poop) on the inside, so we think this might be a test nest--one the birdies built for a trial run.

Rupert!
 TMI!!!
For Cod's sake, sir, show some decency.
Sorry about that, kitties.

May Ling got feathers stuck on her whiskers which was no surprise...

...look at how many there were lining the nest.  Some birdy had a bald belly for sure.
Mommy thinks this might be an Oriole nest--what do you think?  We did see some around last summer.

Tomorrow...Scouty is entranced.

Happy Tuesday!
