Kitties!
Mommy went out to take photos of the baby hummingbirds Thursday morning and they scared the bejeebers outta her--they flew right up at her and then into the tree!
They are fiesty little buggers. Mommy couldn't see the second chick but she sure could hear it...they were both screaming their fool heads off while Missus Hummer dive-bombed Mommy.
About the only time they shut up was when they were getting fed--yup, Mommy saw it(!!)--but unfortunately she wasn't fast enough to get any photos.
The chicks are about half the size of their Mom, less than two inches (5 cm) long. However, they have a ton of sass...
...and poop...still!
They are still sleeping in the nest but not for too much longer, we think, it's pretty small now compared to how much they've grown. Since we have two hummerbird feeders they may stick around for a bit before they take off for their own territories--but we don't know for sure. Hummers aren't known for their sharing abilities, MOL. In fact, Mommy and Daddy were sitting on the bench in the front yard as it was getting dark and there were at least SIX of 'em squabbling over the feeders! Topping off for the evening, no doubt.
Happy Friday!

Oh how exciting!
ReplyDeleteMommy thinks they're cute!
ReplyDeleteWe think they need to put a little more "meat" on their bones! MOL!
Flying toothpicks! My goodness that is scary. Mommy better wear protection if she ventures out again. Now,can they be lured on the catio to provide entertainment ? Do you think they'd notice you drooling under a nectar tube or ten ?
ReplyDeletewe fink that kitties can easily swat these little hummers, given the chance. but our mom says they're so adorable they shouldn't be harmed.

i have a soft spot in my heart for sassy chicks.
ReplyDeleteThey sound like giant buzzing bees, but they sure are cute!
ReplyDeleteWhen you're that tiny, you need a lot of sass to compensate. :-)
ReplyDeleteOh yes hummers are the classic dy-no-mite in small packages. Mom still is amazed at how they dive bomb each other at the feeder. It has 4 stations but one will not let the other on there. Constant aerobatics.
ReplyDeleteHugs madi your bfff

ReplyDeleteOh that is so much fun seeing your foster kids taking off. You did good getting pictures of the babies. Have a great pictures.
ReplyDeleteWhat cutie-pies. You are so lucky to have them. Last summer was the first time after trying for about five years that we got any hummers to our feeder. Hope they will comeback this summer. XO, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo
ReplyDeleteSo cool! We know what you mean about hummers not being able to share. We've seen some good fights go on around our feeder.
ReplyDeleteI just out my feeder out today. I am hoping for my hummer babies within a few weeks. I will keep their nectar fresh every couple days even if I don't see them.
ReplyDeleteOooh...maybe one (or two) will fly into the Catio. Now that would be exciting, MOL
