Bibber-Wibber Wednesday

Kitties!

The Baby* here.

*Mommy calls me Bibber-Wibbers.  It's undignified.

You may recall I recently was incarcerated and hauled off involuntarily had a vet visit for blood work; I had a "senior blood panel" done.

Well, the results came back and everything was GREAT!  All my innards are working as they should.  My white blood count was high, but considering I just got over Cat Flu the vet wasn't too concerned.

My weight was down though, so I was given carte blanche to eat whatever I want, whenever I want!  The vet would like me to gain about a pound so I have some chowing down to do, like this fine selection:
Sorry about the blurry photo; here I have a dish of chopped deli ham and a dish of baked sammin to nosh on the very instant I feel peckish.

Hmmmmmm, ham + sammin...I think I'll call this treat HAMMIN!

Now, if you'll excuse me, I feel a tiny pang of hunger...

Happy Wednesday!

Sunday with Sheebie

Friends and Kitties!

Sheebie here.

It's been nearly a year since I was able to resume exercising after fracturing my kneecap.  You never realize how much effort it takes to simply move across the room until you break something important.  Overall, I'd say the rehab has been more painful than the actual injury--limping and favoring one side of my body for several months atrophied the muscles and tendons on my left side visibly.  Seriously, my pants were looser on my left leg than my right, and I had (still have, occasionally) chronic lower back pain from the unevenness in my frame.

Last year I started practicing yoga, and I'd been at it about twelve weeks when I had my accident in May.  I enjoyed it so much though that I knew I'd resume it just as soon as I could, and when I went down to Arizona to visit my parents the following October I went to a couple of classes with my Mom (thanks Mom!) and that got the ball rolling for me again.  As long as I respected my knee's edge I was safe.  And oh, how I love it.  The past year has been a revelation in what my body can do--me, almost 52, learning to do a headstand in the middle of the room!  I am amazed and proud of myself.  I've gone at least twice a week for an entire year now and I'm happy to report that my knee is at 100%, and the back/hip pain no longer distracts me enough to deter a good night's sleep or a long walk.  I go to a great studio with small classes and wonderful teachers where there's lots of hands-on adjustments and feedback--it's an incredibly warm and nurturing place for the body and soul.

On the days I don't go to a formal class I like to practice at home, even if it's only for twenty minutes because 1) it's so energizing, and 2) I know that if I don't keep my hip limber I'll suffer that evening--pain is such a powerful motivator!

So I thought I'd toot my own horn for 90 seconds and do a Sun Salutation for you.

It gives me such joy to practice.

Thanks for letting me share!

Sheebus Paterfamiliae

Friends and Kitties!

Sheebie here, and today my post is all about this Man:

my Dad.

Read the article HERE.

Do you see how he's swinging all happy and carefree and strong from the bars?  He hasn't always been like this.

Allow me to digress.

My Dad is a wonderful guy, smart, funny, and he and my Mom have always watched their weight, exercised, and made (for the most part, LOL) intelligent food choices.  He's had a few health issues kick him in the pants--prostate cancer*, a hernia operation, and the assorted aches and pains of getting old, and that was all--until recently.  Late last year some routine tests revealed that his kidneys were excreting excess protein; and further blood work showed that his A1C, the long term measurement for diabetes, was on the rise indicating early onset of the disease.  Being such a conscientious person, my Dad was more than a little upset that his body, which he treated so well, was failing him.  I had been down to visit my folks in October and I had been struck at how frail he was looking, and I was quite concerned for his health--but how do you scold your parents when you're not sure what's wrong?

Well.  Fortunately my parents invested their money wisely and sent me to college, where I majored in the thing that interested me the most--due to my upbringing in a healthy (and maybe a tiny bit obsessive)  household--biochemistry.  So I gave my Dad's test results some serious analytical thought and deduced (in a nutshell) that he didn't have enough muscle mass anymore.  Now I had the ammo to give him a gentle scolding tutorial on how to heal himself, so I fired off a long e-mail and he took it to his doctor, who said (in another nutshell) "I think your daughter's right".

::fistpump::

Never one to let moss gather, my Dad joined a gym, and hired a personal trainer--a wonderful woman named Myrya--who has, over the past four months, shown my Dad how to build himself up.

And what a job she's done!

Of course, he's done all the actual hard work--and it shows.  When I went down to visit last month the change in my Dad was incredible.  He stood straighter, his chest was broader, even his hands looked firmer and more muscular!  The essential tremor is gone in his head and hands, and he moves like he did twenty years ago.  He's put on about five pounds, and I estimate that in total he's actually gained about seven pounds of lean, mean, metabolizing muscle and pared off a couple in fat.

It's been a huge paradigm shift for both he and my Mom, with him going to a supervised, organized work-out.  First and foremost, my Dad has to eat more, and for a guy used to counting every calorie and gram this has been a little hard.  Mom helps, by giving him a nice big snack every afternoon, the lucky dog.  He's learned all about proper hydration, and maybe most importantly of all, the value of rest.  They both used to do some cardio and stretching and light resistance work six days a week, which didn't give their bodies any significant recovery time.  This has all changed.  Not only have they pared down and simplified their routines, they take days off, and naps, too!

They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks, and so I'm forced to the only logical conclusion:  My Dad ain't old yet!

Happy father's Day, Daddy--I'm so proud of you.  You are an inspiration, both to me and to your son-in-law, who cites you as an important impetus for losing weight and getting healthy himself.  I am everso grateful to have you as my Dad.

I Love You.

Happy Sunday, All!

Thankful Thursday

Kitties!

The Baby here.
"Here" being behind the tomato plants, that is.

I have wonderful news:
Mommy spoke with the Vet today, and Dr. Augustine doesn't want to see me until the end of July!  I am feeling so much better.  I'm back to playing and acting crazypants and being naughty and getting into everything and being bossy and running around like my tail's on fire, just like before I felt so ill.  Depending on how my blood work goes I may have to have another round of medicines--it seems that my gall bladder isn't working 100% any more--but the vet thinks my condition is manageable without surgery.  Paws crossed things stay that way...

And thanks to you, my pals (from all over the world!) the Extra Large vet bill and medications have been almost completely paid for!  As in, Mommy and Daddy only had to pay a little bit, and my total bill was almost fourteen hundred dollars...your generosity was (is) amazing.
A big shout out to Marg from Marg's Animals for being the World's Best Internet Auctioneer, and also to Ann from Zoolatry for designing the auction page header and badges.
You ladies ROCK...

So I owe all of you the biggest THANK YOU, ever!
Your love, purrs, prayers, and donations warmed my grizzled flinty heart right down to the core.
(and made Mommy cry a lil' bit)

It bears repeating that my/our Readers are just the absolute best group of folks in the world.
Thank you all, for everything.
I love you.
Now, back to bird-watching.  I'm grateful to be here to do it!

Happy Thursday!
