Our Front Yard George

Kitties!

We have a different type of George living in our front yard.
He's a collared lizard

We don't know if this variety is tasty or not...

...but he sure looks well fed.

Whoops.
Maybe he didn't like us implying he was "hefty"...MOL!

Happy Thursday!

Feathered Friday

Kitties!

We have a daily visitor to our bird bath.
A roadrunner!

He comes in to drink and bathe between noon and one o'clock.
hee hee hee...bedraggled!

Our roadrunner is a Greater Roadrunner, and unlike the cartoon roadrunner, he doesn't say "beep beep", he makes a clacking noise.  He hunts snakes and lizards an scorpions, and all the coyotes we've seen around here would eat him up in one gulp.  And he's NOT purple!

The cartoon got the classic "Roadrunner Stance" correct though...

Happy Friday!

Caturday, in the Yard

Kitties!

The Baby here.

Daddy took a bunch of photos of me the other day (you may have seen one) and I wanted to show you some more.
Because I'm just so cute.

And modest.

And oh, so filthy dirty...

...at least on one side!

Kitties, Mommy is all geared up for her upcoming trip to Finland.  If you are on Facebook, she has created a page called Finnishing School, in which she'll be documenting her traveling adventures, and she will try and post here often as well.  Daddy has promised to email photos of us doing our usual annoying wonderful activities so paws crossed you'll get to see us as well as the Punapippuri Clan.  There are a few commemorative postcards still unspoken for, drop us a line at the email in the sidebar if you would like one.

And now I have to dash around the yard like a Madcat...yesterday I went up and over the back wall into the neighbor's yard!  (There are some excellent eating/barfing weeds over on that side.)  Mommy and Daddy were a tiny tad upset because they had to clamber over the wall after me but like they said at least I feel peppy enough to leap eight feet.

Happy Caturday!

An Answer, and a Mystery...

Kitties!

Many of you wondered what the giant pineapple-y thing was in the front yard by The Baby.
It's the trunk of the canary palm!
Daddy trims it to look like that.

This fellow though...we're not too sure about HIM.
What do you suppose he is?

Begetables

Friends and Kitties!

Sheebie here.

I know some of you are enduring an absolutely crap winter, so I thought I'd post some hopeful photos of our spring veggie garden to cheer you up!
The kale we put in last fall is almost ready.  Scott had to cover it up a few times this winter and it did beautifully.  (Thank you Mom for the frost cloth!)  We put it in a shadier spot this year so I hope to keep it going throughout the summer heat.  I love kale!

The Brussels sprouts are coming along well, too.  I've never grown these before so I really don't know what to expect; but oven-roasted sprouts are so delicious...I hope we get 'em in like gangbusters.

And look--I didn't know it but Scott sowed radishes for me!  What a guy.  They'll be ready in another month.  I'll pickle some, make kim chee, and we'll chow down the rest raw with salt.

The tomato patch!
The blue stakes are for the shade cloth which we're already using--the plants are still pretty tender and it's been in the 80's during the day--they got a little crisp the day Scott transplanted them.  We still have a half-gallon of cherry tomatoes in the freezer from last year, just enough to keep us in pizza sauce and marinara until these are ready to be picked.

I killed another dehydrator last week so I ordered a commercial-grade one this time with a 10-year warranty to dry tomatoes, fruit, and (of course) make chikkun titz jerky for the cats.  We ate dehydrated cherry tomato "raisins" last year on everything; salads and sandwiches and for snacks.  They were phenomenal and I plan to make twice as many this year!

The wildflowers are starting to pop up in the beds and the bees were busy in the arborvitae today harvesting sap.  More photos to come...

Happy Sunday!

Snoopervising Saturday with Shadow

Kitties!

Miss Shadow here, repurrting from Arizona.
One of the Special Duties I perform is the Feline Safety Scan...

...keeping the yard free of javelinas!

Which I saw, once, over the wall.  And I did not slither on my belly like a reptile for the back door, thank you very much!

Happy Saturday!

Monday Mosey

Kitties!

Who's behind the cypress tree?

Whoever it is, they're moving...

...quickly!

Well, hello!
It is I, The Baby.
But you already guessed that, didn't you?
I was outside inspecting the yard for Georges--they often rustle around in the rocks back here between the cypress and the wall.  Mommy of course was taking photos.

This photo came out a little fuzzed but we both liked the way my pretty whiskers made a fan so I said it was OK to use.

In this shot I'm ignoring her pleadings to look at her.
 I can't seeeeeeee you!
And that was that.

Happy Monday!

Feathered Friday

Kitties!

We have exciting news.
It's a hummingbird nest...

...and look--Mrs. Hummer is in it!

We have hummers in our yard year-round, and Daddy feeds them.  Every morning when Mommy goes out with The Baby they get strafed as soon as they round the North corner of the house, so Mommy got crafty suspicious and watched for a couple of days to see where the tiny dive-bomber was emerging from.  Turns out that the bottle-brush tree is the new nursery.

Mommy peeked inside the nest when Mrs. Hummer was at the feeder, and sure enough, there's two eggs inside!  Thay are tiny, like miniature jellybeans.  Mommy will try to get photos but she doesn't want to scare Mrs. Hummer off, so she's no promises.  (She took these with the zoom.)

Furthermore, you'll be pleased to know that our fur is in the nest!  Mommy distinctly saw cat hairs poking out all over.  Incubation lasts only two weeks so we'll be updating soon...

Happy Friday!

The Restful Blues

Kitties!

When we saw this week's Saturday PhotoHunt we knew right away what to post!

The theme is ~BLUE~

This blue bench is in our back yard, and Daddy sits on it every morning watching The Baby while she performs her Daily Inspection.

In Which Sheebie does not Act her Age.

Friends and Kitties!

At our house Scott is the Landscape Guru and I am the Instigator of Low Humor; occasionally these two things converge.  Last Friday Scott had a ton of pond rock delivered for top dressing in our entryway.  He called me at work when he was done:

Scott:  Hey.

Me:  HEY!

Scott:  So, I'm done with my rock project.

Me:  Already? You don't mess around when you play with your rocks.

*guffaw*

Me:  So, how big are your rocks?

Scott:  My rocks are all different sizes, and they're so heavy I need to use the wheelbarrow to move them!

Me:  Don't trip on your rocks!

Scott:  I won't.  Don't panic Sheeb, but some of my rocks are broken.

*laughter*

And later, when I got home:

Scott:  Come admire my rocks.
Feel free to tread upon them.

Me:  Your rocks are multicolored!
They look great.

Scott:  They're a little dull right now, my rocks look better when they're wet.

*snort*

The project does look nice--since the entryway faces East and doesn't get much sun anything we* put in there gets spindly after a year or two.  Scott moved the plumbago out of the archway planters (it didn't take) and put star jasmine in to grow up over the archway, and it's growing like crazy.  We'd like a couple of big pottery pieces for accents, but we're still thinking about what--and it'll have to meet with Puffy Cat's approval.
A close up of Scott's hefty rocks

The newly remodeled entryway
Big things are happening with the park across the street!
More on that next Sunday...I promise.

Happy Sunday and have a Fun Week!

A Pictorial Sunday with Sheebie

Friends & Kitties!

Sheebie here, with the State of the Yard report.
Do you see the two tree/bush thingies on either side of the entryway?  After the landscaper put them in we discovered that they were two different varieties.  This bugged Scott endlessly, and no matter how he pruned them he was never happy with how they looked.

I freely admit that most all the decorating decisions at my house are up to Scott.  I may pick paint colors and voice an opinion, but he's got a far better eye than I do for how things should "go".  (Which doesn't explain his cluttering prediliction, but whatever.)

So I came home a few Saturdays ago, and the trees were gone!  This sort of project always happens on Saturday--we have Weird Garbage (our term) pickup every other Monday so a Saturday tear down allows for Sunday clean-up and Monday takeaway.

We lived with the nude look a few days, to see how we (Scott) liked it, and he decided he wanted an trellis archway over the walk for a creeping vine.  He also determined that the box plants in the foyer were not getting enough light from the Eastern exposure to thrive, and they were going to have to go.  Our neighbor took one box, but none of our friends wanted any, even when Scott offered to plant them.  Able to chop offending bushes down but unwilling to kill several innocent box plants, Scott had to devise a new scheme.

He decided to move some of the box plants forward to the empty front areas.  There are still some in the foyer, but they are doing okay for now--Scott's thinking of vinca or some other ground cover with low light requirements to grow in and around around the remaining plants.

And he bought an arbor for the entryway!  He took the bottoms out of the planters (on the sides) and put plumbago directly in the ground.  It should fill in the arbor completely; and we hope it will flower most of the spring and summer.

On the right you can see that there are box plants along the knee wall as well--they are a different species than the replanted ones, so they'll be different shades of green.

I promised to show you the progress with "our" park this week, but I got terrible photos.  There's no contrast between the concrete curbing and the desert soil (by design so it blends in) and I thought I'd wait another week and see how much further along it gets.  It appears that the roads are ready to be laid, and several pallets of bricks are on site for the rest area building.  I get to eye hunky construction men every morning, too!  Life is good.

The pigeon that we rescued last week did not survive.  Crystal took him home, and named him Golda (after our street).  He ate and drank and roosted--but the next day he was lethargic again and wobbly--and the next day he passed.  She thinks he may have sustained a head injury as he was in good shape physically.  We were all sad, but at least Golda wasn't bullied to death by the rest of his flock and had palliative care at the end.  Sometimes that's the best you can hope for with a wild animal rescue.

My Mom and Dad are in the Frisco Bay area this week--you west coasters keep an eye out for them.  They'll be the cute couple celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary!  The actual date is July 10th, and I'm flying down that day for a few days to visit.  They have all kinds of fun things lined up.  I swear, they wear me out.  Naturally my Mom will have some killer desserts for me and my Dad to eat as slowly as possible.  My newest strategy is going to be asking for a really large piece to get an edge through sheer volume.  I'll keep you posted.

Happy Sunday!
Have a good week everyone-

Deep Dark Secrets...

Kitties!

The Baby here, and I have some fantastic dirt to dish!
I'm gonna need a little help though.

DADDY!
Get outside and take the pictures I need.
Now!

Daddy:  Yes, Ma'am!

This is our front yard.
Daddy loves to garden and the past couple of weeks he's been working out here, transplanting bushes, resetting the stepping stones, and all kinds of heavy manly man stuff.

The big oval in between the palm trees is new.

Do you see the big urn-thingy in the middle?
You do?
Good.
Because it was FREE!
Mommy garbage-picked it.

That's right, Mommy AND Daddy are garbage pickers.
They slow down when they drive by "interesting" trash...you just never know if there might be something good in there!  In fact, our old house was once furnished in the Late Twentieth-Century Castoff style.

But I digress.

Last Sunday Mommy was driving down our street and the urn-thingy was sitting in a pile of trash.  She tromped on the brakes, jumped out, and assessed it...the urn was a score!  But it was too heavy to load into the back of her car.  Not a problem, she raced home to get Daddy--you never want to be "out-picked, you know"--and they zoomed back up the block to retrieve their prize.
And now, it's resting in our front yard.

Recycling at it's best.

Happy Thursday!
