Not so Easy Sunday

Kitties!

Grayce here, and I'm a little worried right now...
...and not because Sylvester is hogging the cube.

Sylvester:  I'm not a HOG!  I'm a Cat.  Doofus.
*grumblegrumblegrumble*

Grayce:  Whatever.
Here's what I'm worried about:

In March of 2010 I had a problem with my bladder; I had to pee all the time and I felt pretty crummy.  After a couple of trips to the vet it turned out I had bladder stones, TWO of 'em!  Mommy & Daddy decided that the stones had to go, so I had surgery and I'm fit as a fiddle now.

Last week I found out that another kitty has the same problem that I had; it's Annie, from Lucy's Lounge.  Annie is new to her home, her Mommy saved her from going to the shelter by adopting her, which is FABULOUS!  But the day after she moved in she started peeing blood, and after a couple of vet trips for her, it turns out Annie has bladder stones too!

This is where the trouble is.  My surgery was almost $800, and Annie's vet quoted a price over TWICE that amount!  Her mom is very worried about this, and is trying to find a more reasonably priced vet.  Also, my surgery was laproscopic, and I was home the same day--Annie's vet says a three day hospitalization, which is no fun, for us kitties OR Moms & Dads.

And this is where YOU can help!

Annie lives (in her new home) in Orange County, California.  Is there anybody in the area that can recommend a good vet for a second opinion and/or surgery?  Her mom says she'd be willing to travel a little bit if needed; in fact she half-joked about coming to Las Vegas on the phone with our Mommy, it would be so much less expensive.  (Not that we'd mind meeting another Cat Blogger!)

Kitties, I KNOW we can help Annie!

Let's get our purrers going and our networking skills revved up and help Annie out.
Or I'll bite you.
ha ha ha!

Thanks so much, Kitties.

You can leave a comment with us or HERE.

Happy Sunday!

  3. We've got our purr motors going for Annie! We are sure that there are smart Bloggers in Southern California who know good vets who can help.

If she was looking in Oregon we'd be able to help for sure...but all we can do in this case is purrrr.

Do you think Sparkle's mom would know of someone?

  4. We're no help either. When finding a second opinion they may want to ask about laproscopic surgery versus just regular surgery. It is our guess that smaller, older clinics may not have the special clinic equipment to allow that sort of procedure and/or the vets may not have been trained to do it that way. Additionally, even if they have, there may be a reason for making a different choice, including placement of the stone so it is helpful to have a second opinion who can explain all of that to them as well.

  5. you might try asking Dr. V. from Pawcurious. She is a vet and is somewhere in Southern California. If she is not nearby she may know of someone who is.

  6. I don't have a whole lot of suggestions for her - my regular vet costs an arm and a leg - but I will try.

  7. Dear Grayce,
Wish we're not millions of miles away. Our vet is very reasonable, even allows staggered payments if need be. Most impawtant of all, he's a feline serf too. He finds great satisfaction in saving felines and canines that other vets have given up on. We're purraying very very hard Annie's mom finds someone soon. Come on, California! Rise to the occasion. purrr...meow!

  13. We're so sorry our vet is not an option seeing as we're in France. We are shocked at how pricey many vets are these days, and are crossing our paws that another vet can be found for little Annie.

    Purrs,

  15. So sorry about Annie. I went over there and left a comment. We hope she can find a vet that doesn't cost as much. She really needs to look into it all more. Take care.

  16. We will purr and pray for Annie for sure! I'll also ask my sister which vet she takes cousin Zoey to (they live in Orange County).

  17. I remember about Annie and it hurt me and mommy to know she was going thru that. I hope someone can help with a good Vet and one that can and will do the laproscopic surgery. SO much easier on Annie if so and she'll come home.

  21. We can't help but we wondered if a mention about this on the CB would help if one of our bloggers is someone from Orange County and could help - or ask at a shelter if they have a vet who would be prepared to do it at a reasonable cost.

  22. Oh that poor kitty that must hurt too!
We know someone will have a better idea and recommend someone good.

Mom still thinks veggies are for playing with, she's never been a big fan of them but its coming along.
Mom has been doing the weight loss thing for 2 years now. Little steps go a long way. Congrats for your people in doing it too!

  25. If it were CANADA instead of California, I might be able to help. :( But I'm sending healing purrs for Annie!

  26. We bet OUR vet would do it the one-day way, but we're in Maryland an we dont THINK that is close enough.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Grayce, You and your mom are so sweet to post about Annie! I'm going through the comments here and received a few on our blog too. I'll be looking into all the suggestions. The outpouring of concern is just so sweet and amazing.

    Big hugs,
    Vicki

p.s. I found a VCA here that I called after I talked to you. Their estimate was $3,000! I'll be calling Victorville VCA on Tuesday. There was one idea to call vets that local shelters use. I'm going to do that too in addition to the other ideas.

  31. Our brother Tinker had a bad bought with bladder stones 2 years ago. He was in the vets 2 days with an IV....no operation! He can not have ANY dry food. We eat canned Wellness and our fav is the turkey. One of the best things Mommy does if Tinker shows signs of not being himself,....she gives him clear Pedialyte several times a day till he is back to peeing normally and she keeps an eye out to make sure he is using the pan.
Our new kitten brother was on dry food when Mommy adopted him from Stray Cat Blues so she feed him in the big cage he sleeps in at night. He was changed to Wilderness dry and now is getting the Wellness canned twice a day and dry when he goes to bed in his cage. He just turned 5 months old and his feral ways are almost gone. Tinker grabbed a couple of dry pieces that fell to the floor and we found him peeing where he shouldn't so he is on the Pedialyte again for about 3 days.
Mommies note....till you find another Vet, please get her on the clear Pedialyte...it will keep her system hydrated and it helps wash out the crystals. I give Tinker his Pedialyte using one of the small medicine syringes from the Boyz Vet. Good luck=^Y^=

  32. Oh Grayce!! We do not want a bitey, but way over here in Georgia, we do not know any vets over there on that side.
We hope Annie can get some help. We think vets have gone up on their prices because a lot of beans have stopped taking their pets to the doctor unless it is a big emergency because of the economy now days.
Sending lots of love and luck to Annie..

  33. We're purring for Annie! We hope her mom can find a more reasonably priced vet. Are there any vet schools in any of those LA universities? Maybe Ms. Stella O'Houligan and her mom Stacy know of another vet because they live in Orange County, CA too.

  34. I hope Annie is better soon! I had surgery to remove bladder stones and it was No Fun. Mine was done through regular surgery and I had to stay two nights at the hospital, so laparascopic sounds like the way to go for sure. My holistic vet said the main thing is for me to avoid dry food completely now.

  35. We hopes you find something. It maybe cheaper to come to Vegas for the surgery.

    ReplyDelete
  36. We will purr for her!!! But you know Grayce, I'll take you up on that bite threat--er, offer :-)

We iz having the Computer Problems. We might be gone for a bit :-( Don't forget me!!!

  40. We used Dr. Aten and Dr. Hansen at Corona del Mar Animal Hospital in Corona Del Mar, Ca which was just down the coast highway from our house. We had use another vet who was marginally competent and more $ before finding them. We haven't been th them since 2001 when we moved but they were excellent! Good sound care! When we moved we were hard presses to find as good of care. As for the surgery, one of our adoptees had it prior to adoption. It was done in New Jersey about 10years ago and was over 2,000.00$ then! ( I have his medical records.) I don't know if Drs Aten/ Hansen do lap or refer it out. But they will be scrupulously honest in their assessment if you need a 2nd opinion. There is a 3rd doc with them now who I know nothing about. I read some of their reviews a few were less than stelar which we can't believe. We were always treated very well and my cats were never afraid to go to the vets after being seen there. The hispital is located in an area where the population is educated, medically savy, and expect excellent care. At the time we were their clients, we were the clients with the most cats. LOL!

  41. Holy smokes!!!! That is very expensive! We will be purring and purring for a less expensive vet to be found!

  42. You could contact Dr. V at Pawcurious.com or the Rancho Santa Fe Vet, located in the Helen Woodward Animal Center in San Diego: http://www.rsfvets.com/

    I hope these help.
