In The Jungle

Kitties!

Shadow here, hunting.

There's a lizard underneath this bush, I just know it.

He will never escape my sharp claws and Fangs o'Doom!

Well, OK, maybe THIS time he got away.

But only because I let him.

Happy Monday!

Toadally Tuesday

Kitties!

We have some new inhabitants in our yard, Woodhouse's Toads.

There is at least one living in the front entryway, and Mommy has seen two at once in the back yard!
Being the avid naturalists that we are, one of us (not saying who) brought a specimen in for closer examination in the wee hours of the morning.

Mommy spotted him when she came into the kitchen to feed us...at first she thought he was *ahem* a TURD but then he hopped...and since she'd never seen leaping feces before she grabbed her phone, just in case this was a toadally (sorry) historical event.

After the video Mommy took Mr. Toad out to the garden and set him free.  She examined him first for viability, 'cos you never know if our victims pets have been irreversibly...um... "compromised" and need to go into The Morgue* for later disposal.  He didn't have any holes though, and all his parts were intact.  And functional.  So out he went.

After he warmed up a bit outside--it's cold on the tile floor--he lurched off under the catnip.
Until we meet again...

Happy Tuesday!

Kat VS Kadiddlehopper

Kitties!

Sweet Pea here.
Mommy was whaling relaxing on the sofa when she heard the cat flap flapping madly...there was a cat conga line through the door, and everyone was following me!

This could only mean one thing:
Prey!
It was a ginormous grasshopper kadiddlehopper.
Minus a leg.

Kitties, he was so much fun!  Even in his compromised state he had us running and leaping all over the living room in pursuit.

(Mommy didn't have much time to do anything but grab a camera and start taking photos, so I apologise for the quality.)

He drew quite the crowd.

After a few tentative paw pats I gave it a taste.  It was awful, which is why I didn't chase CC when he grabbed it from me and started crunching it down.  (And  foamed from the flavor.)  Naturally this won't stop us from sampling any insects in the future--you never know--maybe there's an absolutely delicious variety of kadiddlehopper out there...yet!

Happy Thursday!

Feathered Flying Feast!

Kitties!

Shadow here.
So, I was out patrolling with my Dad when a dove flew into my mouth!

Well, actually there was some stalking, leaping, and snatching the birdy out of the air involved while I almost went over the wall but the results were the same:  I CAUGHT HIM!

And wouldn't you know it, after a mighty struggle he got away...but not before he lost a few million feathers...Mom and Dad picked TONS of 'em out of my claws when I went indoors.

It was EPIC.

Next time, I'll totally take that dove down.
***waiting***

Happy Friday!

Carnage.

Kitties!

Guess who we're watching?
The Baby caught a birdy on her Morning Stroll, and since for her it's all about the catch and kill, she brought it in for us to "inspect".

 CC called dibs.

If your humans would rather not see photos of him going crazypants with his prey we understand--but you bloodthirsty kittehs will probably really enjoy the following shots:

Anybody lurking?
This birdy is MINE!
wheeeeeeeee!!!!!
Where'd it go?

AHA!

Double wheeeeeeee!!!!!!

Thanks Bibby!  You rock.

Happy Monday...and we hope your peeps weren't too grossed out!

The George Returneth

Kitties!

The Baby here.
I'm sorry that I can't give you my Full Attention right now, but I just saw my first George, a.k.a. LIZARD, of the season!

He skittered across the yard, only to disappear under these rocks, where I can hear him, doing Lizardly Things.  Rustling.  Teasing me.
That's OK George...I'm, patient.
I have all summer to exact my revenge on you, and your scaly, tasty, brethren.

Happy Saurian Saturday!

An Exciting Arizona Event!!!

Kitties!

Shadow here.
I've cleverly hidden myself behind this wall.

Why, you ask?

Because there was one of THESE:
in my yard today!!

Several times.

I'll let my Daddy tell the story.

Today was the first time we saw Shadow see a bobcat.  Actually it was the first five times!

At about 6:45 AM (which is about 15 minutes before horizon sunrise and 45 minutes before it clears the mountain) it's pretty dark outside and Shadow is at her kitchen window when I notice her all tense.  Mr. Bobcat is on our upper patio waiting for birds to come to the feeder. No action so he exits stage right into Bill's yard.  She zips to the patio door to watch him leave.

7:00 AM.  Birds are coming in when Mr. Bobcat reappears from outside our wall jumping and missing his target.  So he jumps down into our yard not knowing about the piercing eyes that are watching him--and exits stage left into Clark's yard.

Five minutes later he saunters back right in front of her and into Bill's yard again.

It's later now and we're eating breakfast inside and we again have a tense cat; Mr. Bobcat is crouched again on our upper patio.  Birds know there are fresh peanuts but face either death by starvation or death by being eaten.  They choose starvation so he exits stage left again.

Five minutes later he reappears in front of Shadow again with a quail in his mouth and goes into Bill's yard for the last time.

We had no bushy tail, no growl, no scream.  The window was closed and she probably saw his size and decided to leave well enough alone.  Of course, she didn't leave the two windows for the rest of the morning!

Kitties, I was a very keyed up pussycat the rest of the day...I need a nap!  That ginormous Tailess Menace could come back, at any time, day or night.  Maybe I should lobby for an assistant.

Happy Wednesday!

Mighty Maui Munches Mousie!

!!!!WARNING!!!!

The following post contains graphic mousie-munching photos!!!
Young kittens and squeamish peeps: proceed at your own risk.

Kitties!

Maui here.
Friday night I shot into the living room with most of my furblings in hot pursuit; I had snagged a mousie out on the Catio and everybody wanted in on it and there really wasn't enough to share.  You know how it is.  Of course Mommy saw what was going on (perceptive for once) and sprang into action--she shooed the Slavering Horde away from me (I was growling like a semi-truck going uphill) and grabbed the camera to document the event.  I tell you what, Mommy has her priorities straight.
I took my prize into Daddy's office where he could lay in state.

I prodded him a few times...

...and rearranged him.

After a few Fang Shui adjustments, he was Just Right.

For eating.

::crunchity crunch crunch crunch::

mmmmmmmmm...brains!

Mommy says I'd make a good zombie...I can't imagine why.

At this point Mommy removed the lower portion what was left of my prize and put it in the freezer* for me, for later!
I sure hope I get to finish it soon...

Happy Monday!!

*Freezer = Morgue.  Where carcasses go until trash day...sometimes startling Daddy if he doesn't know one is in there.  Pretty funny, actually.  He squeals.

Formerly Feral Friday: Ferocious!

Kitties!
We've been pretty busy here at the Lounge.
As you all know, we were all out on the streets when we were kitten tots, and beyond. So even though we get stinky goodness twice daily (and chix-hen treats every chance we can) we like to keep up our Hunting Skills.
Summertime is excellent for Live Prey Hunting, none of those fake mousies or feather toys!
Although if you would like to wave the feather toy...well, how's a Cat to resist?
But we digress.
EXHIBIT A: One small lizard. Daddy, that rotten fluffer, took him away before we could deliver the killing blow... and put him back outdoors!
Mister Lizard, we've got your name (George) and we'll be waiting for you.

Sweet Pea and George.
EXHIBIT B: A four-inch Desert Hairy scorpion. We pull the stinger off and play away! Scorpions get dedded pretty quick (bummer) but they hold together really well so there's a lot of good tossing and batting action to be had.
Oh yeah, and the screaming from your Humans when they see you with the Scorpion...Priceless.
Scouty & the de-stingered scorpion.
EXHIBIT C: Jiminy Cricket, his brothers, sisters and other members of his family.

Eaten by this insatiable Beast:
Felix, Sated.

EXHIBIT D: Mister Roach. We get these big brown concrete-surfers here in the desert. They're a lot of fun to hunt and play with, and they last a long long time, even after you pull the legs and stuff off. However, they taste nasty so we leave 'em for Mommy to admire (and dispose of).
Roach, Interupted.
So there you have it, Kitties, our weekly take!
Of COURSE we could support ourselves out in the wild...but why?
Happy Friday!
