Katurday Kosy

Kitties!

Miss KosyKonaKitty here.

Mommy put a heaty pad beneath my sheepie fleece* on the sofa to keep my old bones warm, and I ADORE it.  I'm getting ricketier by the day, but I still eat my foods with gusto, drink copious amounts of cream, (served several million times a day) and have all sorts of sass to spare:

"They" say a ladycat can never be too rich or too thin--well, I'm plenty thin, and absolutely loaded (to the hilt--ed.) with affection!

Happy Katurday!

Breakfast Order

Kitties!

KonaKitty here.

Every morning I serenade Mommy whilst she fixes my brekky and--the best part--sprinkles it with Fortiflora Magic Dust for extra flavor.

I LOVE MAGIC DUST.

If you turn up the sound you'll hear my plaintive cries me commanding Mommy to hurry up and FEED ME NOW!

Is she well trained or what?

Cozy Caturday

Kitties!

KonaKitty, Sweet Pea, and The Baby here.

Mommy purchased this Most Wonderful blanket, thinking it would be perfect for her to laze around on the sofa when it gets chilly in the evening.
She was correct!

It's JUST RIGHT.

Oranges?

Kitties!

Well, to satisfy certain Inquiring Minds, we'd like to report that Mommy picked the oranges, too!
A great big bucket...

...and another HUGE tub--over 60 pounds (27 kilos) of oranges in total.
And just as well, it's probably gonna hit the freezing mark any evening now.

Now you might think "Those aren't oranges, they're GREENS", and you would be correct; they will turn color within a few days once they get indoors and warm up.  Most of them are destined to be sliced and dehydrated--Mommy enjoys a couple slices in her ice water daily and occasionally she throws a couple in her smoothie to give it a citrusy tang.  Since they are all organic with no insecticides, sprays, or wax on the peel they are good to consume completely!

Oh, and one more thing, the most important one, actually:
We got nip!
Salem's whingeing lament did the trick.  Here Kona is enjoying a nice nippy bib rub...boy was she wrecked!  Daddy grows some mean greens.

Merchandising Monday

Kitties!

This an embarrassing (for her) photo of Mommy.
She's washing out some tie dye, wearing an old shirt of Daddy's, flip flops, and her groovy beanie.  Mommy is such a snappy dresser.

She did make some cool stuff though!
A tie-dyed length of fabric.  This is t-shirt material, and she's gonna sew pillow cases with it.  Daddy can't wait--they will be for him.

Perfecting peace signs.  This is a tea towel--and to be honest Daddy tied this one.  He made a bunch of them in all different colors.

Can you tell where this is going?

Yup.

Tie-dyed PET SHIRTS.
As if fur wasn't enough...
...and in large enough sizes to fit everybody!

Apparently Cats in Shirts are funny (!!!) and Daddy was shaking too hard with laughter to get crisp photos.

But you get the idea.

Cats, in tie dyed shirts.

Daddy had to chase Sylvester and Kona around to get them off after a couple of hours--seems like Felix* isn't the only kitty in the house who enjoys wearing clothes.

Kitties, you too can give your peeps extreme joy by sporting one of these fancy shirts--they are for sale in our Etsy shop Tie Dyed Chicken Jerky, (link also at the top of the page) along with CATIO CHIPS!, and custom tie-dyed apparel for humans.  Oh, and triangle bandannas too--just the thing for accessorizing your furs for that far-out look.  Please click over and have a look, and remember Daddy can pack CATIO CHIPS! in any size; they'll make PURRfect stocking stuffers for all the Good Kitties on Sandy Claw's list.
Oh heck, Bad Kitties will like 'em too...maybe even MORE.

Happy Monday!

Partial Noodity

Kitties!

Kona here.
If I look a bit discombobulated in this photo, well, it's because I am.

Friday morning, with no warning whatsoever (so I could HIDE) I was stuffed placed gently into a carrier and hauled off to the vet's office for a GROOMING, for a variety of reasons:

  I'm shedding my summer coat
I loathe being brushed
I BITE
I had tons of mats which appeared overnight
I'm too arthritic to attend to the mats myself
I bite HARD
My unbelievably long clicking toenails need to be professionally trimmed, because, you guessed it, I BITE.
Nothing wrong with the ol' jaws on this ladycat!

Unfortunately the groomer lady scared me witless wore chain mail which meant I forgot to give her a big juicy chomp, so she shaved my mats, gave me a bath-n-blow dry, a comb out, AND trimmed my talons without any loss of blood.

I feel a lot better now though...I may have to admit the whole ordeal wasn't all THAT bad.

NOT.

Second Best Seat

Kitties!
Mommy was sitting on the hard uncomfortable park bench on the Catio (because SOME kitty *koff koff Scouty koff koff* insists on sleeping in the Cozy Chair) while having her coffee and toast for breakfast.

KonaKitty was a wee tad confused--Scouty was NOT her Mommy!

Just where in the heck was Mommy?

**employing Mommy-dar**

AHA!

And then there were no more photos because Miss Kona will not be denied her pettings...and she wants both hands.

Sleepy Senior Selfie

Kitties!

KonaKitty here.
My all time favorite place for summertime snoozing on the Catio is by this chair...at 18 (years) I'm a little rickety and achy with arthritis so I don't mind the heat one bit.  Even when it's in the hundreds you can find me out here, blissfully napping.

Until, that is, until some Mommy shows up with the camera.

It's all good though, she helped me snap a (Senior) Sunday Selfie for the blog hop this week at The Cat on My Head!

Snuggling with Sheebie

Friends and Kitties!

We're joining the Sunday Selfie Blog Hop:

Sheebie here, with a kinda-sorta snuggling selfie.
As you can see, I never lack for feline company.

I'd like to apologize for not commenting on as many blogs as often lately--the pure-D fact is that I'm burned out.  Don't worry, I'm not considering stopping blogging because I'm incapable of shutting up but I wanted to let y'all know that we still make the rounds and enjoy reading every day.

Thanks for all the nice comments on my yoga post!  I'd like to encourage all of you to give it a try sometime, even if you have a disability you can benefit from seated poses either on the floor or in a chair.  What I'm doing is the result of a year of practice and I never, in my wildest dreams, thought I'd be capable of the flexibility I've achieved--not to mention the wonderful feeling of mental centeredness that lasts far beyond the actual routine.  Scott practices regularly as well which helps him cope with his arthritis.  He uses a series of DVDs put out by a yogi named Peggy Cappy, and she is great; each pose/asana has variations according to your physical ability.  (She has stuff on YouTube, check it out!)

Scott and I have gone back into the kitchen and have been chef-ing up a storm lately.  Neither one of us cares for restaurant--or even prepared--food any more (flatus, anyone?) so out of self-preservation we've re-divvied up the household chores and I've made time to bake and cook.  It's funny, I wander into the kitchen thinking I'm "just going to do thus-and-such" and HOURS later I stagger out, laden with loaves, meals, and sides.  Scott, who up until recently was indifferent to my cooking (he used to be the chef) is now actually requesting certain dishes!  It's very fulfilling to prepare something nourishing for someone you love.  Even if it's yourself--we all have to eat.

On that note, I had a request for my pretzel roll recipe and it's at the end of the post.  I've  tweaked it a little to suit our taste, but the unaltered recipe can be found HERE--as well as lots of other excellent cooking ideas.  I find they are best eaten the day you make them (they take about 2 hours start to finish) or frozen then zapped in the microwave.  We always have some in the freezer, they are our go-to for sandwiches.

So, you have your instructions for the week:
1. stretch
2.  eat well
3. love yourself

Happy Sunday!

XX  Sheebie  XX

WHOLE WHEAT PRETZEL ROLLS

Ingredients:
1 cup milk
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup light brown sugar
2 tablespoons molasses
1 packet active dry yeast (2-1/2 tsp)
2 tablespoons coconut oil (or other fat)
2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
1 cup bread flour
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup baking soda
Pretzel salt or coarse ground sea salt, for sprinkling

Directions:
In a small saucepan, heat the milk, 1/2 cup water, sugar and molasses to 105 to 110 degrees F. Add to the bowl of a stand mixer. Sprinkle the yeast over the water mixture and wait 10-15 minutes until the yeast blooms.

Combine flours in a mixing bowl.

Add the flour mixture to the bowl with the blooming yeast, and then add in the coconut oil. Mix on medium speed until the dough has come together and is smooth and elastic in texture and pulling away from the sides of the bowl, 5 to 7 minutes.

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured cutting board and form into a ball. Cut into 12 equal pieces. Using your hands, roll each piece into a ball and place onto a lightly floured surface. Cover with a dish cloth and let them rest in a warm place for 12 to 15 minutes.

Once rested, flour your work surface again and form the balls into flat discs, about 3" across. Place back in the warm spot and let rest for another 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Place one oven rack high and one low. Line 2  baking sheets with silicone mats or parchment paper.

In a large pot, bring 8 cups water to a boil, and then add the baking soda. In batches (3 or 4), place the discs in the water and cook for 30 seconds on each side.

Using a slotted spatula, remove the buns and place onto the prepared baking sheets. Sprinkle with pretzel salt as they come out of the water to ensure the salt sticks. Then cut 3 diagonal slits on top of the bread, not too deep.

Bake for 10 to 13 minutes, rotating between the top and bottom racks of the oven halfway through the cooking.

Enjoy!

Friday is for FEASTING

Kitties!

Miss KonaKitty here.

You know, getting older isn't all that bad--there are compensations.
Like this cozy heated bed...

...and mealtimes!
or click HERE

I'm a little unreasonably picky about what flavor food I like--sometimes I change my mind mid-lick--so Mommy makes sure I get first crack at all the flavors on my Special Feeding Station (i.e. the coffee table).  Even then I sometimes decide I hate them all and hop up on the sofa to scream and scream and scream my displeasure!  This usually results in Mommy sprinkling some "magic dust"* on the food, which, Cod help me, I am unable to resist, and then I dive in like a tiny feline swine, as demonstrated in the video.

Life is Good.

Happy Friday!

Crafting Trauma

Kitties!

KonaKitty here, reporting on Mommy's Right Wrist.

It's a long story, better settle in with a cuppa nip tea and tuna treats...

Ready?

OK.

A looooong time ago, back in Illinois, before I had so darn many brothers and sisters, Mommy used to do a lot of sewing and needlework.  She had a room all set up for crafting and used to get together with friends once a month to work on mutual projects.  Then we moved into 1) a much smaller house in Nevada where 2) Mommy didn't know anybody crafty and 3) there were suddenly 13 kitties in residence.  (The largest and most significant impediment--ed.)  Mommy's crafting sorta fell by the wayside.  Then, she started working evenings instead of days at work, and there was a paradigm shift in how her work time was organized--the majority of the actual "labor" was concentrated into the first two and last three hours of her 10-hour shift, leaving a pleasant gap between in which to eat her dinner, read blogs and screw off on the internet monitor the system.

Now, Mommy is easily bored an antsy person, so keeping her hands busy actually helps her concentrate on her job (unlike us kitties who can stare at stuff for hours), and after a few weeks she realized the gap was the perfect time to take up some small crafty projects again...like crocheting.   It was an elegant solution; Mommy could make things without elebenty cats "helping" her, while staying alert at work.

One Monday afternoon one of her work buddies, Gil, stopped in to chat at shift change.  Gil makes all-organic lotions, balms, and soaps for local craft fairs and he saw Mommy's crocheting and wondered if she could make him some bath scrubbies to include in his gift packs.  Mommy said "of course" and over the next few weeks they settled on how many, the pattern, and what she'd make them out of: a nice sturdy hemp twine.  Naturally there were balls of leftover hemp discarded from the trial scrubbies, and Mommy, being the OCD frugal soul that she is, cast about for some use for them.  (She already has enough proto-scrubbies to scour an army!)  She decided to make a couple of large doilies for the two round end-tables...and that's what did her wrist in.  The first doily was made out of hemp cord, which, although rough, was pliable.  The second doily was made from hemp twine which is stiff stiff stiff--the same stuff she made the scrubbies out of but of course the they were much smaller and took less time.  And that's the thing--time.  Mommy worked on the second doily for nearly three hours straight (at home) last Thursday evening and the pressure from twisting the crochet hook did her in.  By Saturday afternoon her wrist was so hurty she could barely wave at a parade, let alone type!

Stoopid Mommy.  At least we got a good story out of the deal.

Anyhoo, 48 hours of wrist-rest and aspirin appear to have done the trick, as evidenced by her taking my dictation and typing this blog post--Mommy's Tale of Woe--for me.  The doilies turned out beautifully, and I'll make sure we post a couple photos for you to see.

Kitties, make sure your humans create safely, or they too may suffer from the Dreaded Crafting Trauma.

Happy Tuesday!

I'm getting pretty frail and skinny these days, but I still have plenty of sass for treats (thrice daily!--ed.) enthusiasm for pettings, and I even played a rousing game of bite-the-yarn with Mommy's crochet project last night!  This old gal's still got game...
